Introduction
The Delta Food Coalition held a strategic planning session in October 2009. The goal of the session was to build on the committee meetings and develop a focused action plan for the Delta Food Coalition in the areas of community outreach & education, communication & public relations as well as municipal engagement.
Thirteen people participated in the process; most of the participants either work or live in the community of Delta.
Background
The Delta Food Coalition includes community citizens and community organizations who are working together to increase food security in Delta. The Coalition is open to all sectors including business, labour, non-profit, residents and all levels of government. Community members may participate by choice at self-determined levels of capacity and interest, with the goal of increasing community capacity and building economic and social opportunities for the purpose of enhancing food security and sustainability.
The Delta Food Coalition has achieved many accomplishments to date and they are:

- Coordinator hired mid June, 2009
- Public presentations
- Corporation of Delta - Lunch and learn sessions
- Delta Cable show
- DFWT – A Day at the Farm
- Earthwise - Grow Local Fair
- Developing community partnerships
- Developing community partnerships
- Adopting ‘power to the parsnip’ logo
- Public opinion survey launched
- Hosted three ‘Let’s Talk Food’ Community forums
- Presentation to Delta Child & Youth Committee
- Brochure developed with ‘Harvesting Health, Creating Community’ tag line
Established Mission and Vision
‘A Sustainable Healthy Community with Food for All’. The Delta Food Coalition will do this through:
- Community partnerships
- Raising awareness
- Encouraging community involvement
- Inviting participation through Municipal engagement
- Making recommendations to key stakeholders
- Mapping local food sources Informing and educating
Areas to Focus Sustainability Efforts
- Develop more stable sources of funding
- Diversify funding
- Terasen Gas
- Van City
- Envision
- Service Clubs
- Product sales (local food cookbooks, toolkits, templates for creating garden plots et cetera)
- Endorsements
- Individual donations
- Memberships
- Promote our success and work to date more extensively in community
- Develop a communication strategy
- Create a website
- Develop a database for fund (friend-raising initiatives)
- Establish an outcome evaluation of the program to better track success
- Enhance and improve participation at the committee and community level to include more stakeholders
- Recruit champions within Community of Delta
- Active participation on the Corporation of Delta Agricultural Advisory Committee
Build capacity through collaborative and cooperative activities with both Earthwise Garden Society (Annual Grow Local Fair) and Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust (A Day at the Farm).
