HandyDART is a special door-to-door, public transit service, which uses specially equipped vehicles designed to carry passengers with special needs. Eligibility is defined as a physical or cognitive disability, either permanent or temporary, that prevents an individual from using conventional public transit without assistance. 

 

HandyCard is issued by TransLink only and is a photo-identity card provided to persons with special needs. The HandyCard holder is entitled to concession fares on Coast Mountain Bus, SkyTrain, SeaBus, West Vancouver Transit and West Coast Express. An Attendant travelling with a HandyCard holder may travel free. The HandyCard is also valid identification for the Taxi Saver Program. Eligibility is defined as a permanent physical or cognitive disability that prevents an individual from using conventional public transit without assistance. The following information is provided to potential HandyDART users. The information contained below explains the eligibility criteria necessary to use the HandyDART Service. The HandyDART/HandyCard Application must be completed by a senior official of a recognized health or social service agency or by the applicant's medical specialist or family doctor. Before completing this verification, please review the following eligibility guidelines.

Loco-motor Related Disabilities

Examples: Arthritis, limb loss, multiple sclerosis or conditions of a similar nature.
-    Unable to walk from home to the nearest bus stop.
-    Unable to negotiate stairs or ramps.
-    Unable to board or alight from a bus

Neurological Related Disabilities

Examples: Cerebral palsy, mental disability, dementia or conditions of a similar nature.
Unable to understand and follow transit directions (does not include foreign language difficulties).  Easily confused or disoriented so that the person is unable to travel safely on public transit.

Sensory Related Disability

Example: Vision Impairment.  Unable to use public transit because of vision impairment.

Medical Condition

Examples: Heart conditions, respiratory problems, epilepsy of a nature not easily controlled by drugs, or conditions of a similar nature. A diagnosed medical condition that does not allow travel on a conventional bus. A diagnosed medical condition that does not allow movement from a residence to the nearest bus stop.

If an individual meets any of these criteria and needs to use the HandyDART or HandyCard programs, he or she should complete the application form provided below. A senior official of a recognized social service or health agency (for example, a public health nurse, long-term care administrator, medical specialist or family doctor) should complete the verification section.
